3.1 upgrade problem

I just upgraded my Amiga 2000 from OS 2.05 to OS 3.1 and encountered the following problem: The pointer comes up in a messy green/brown color; and the busy pointer is a sickly yellow. The Pointer tool "knows" the correct defaults; it just doesn't use them automatically. I partially kludged the problem away by saving the defaults in a file and putting a line is my user-startup file that calls the pointer preferences tool, but this isn't completely satisfactory - if I change any other preferences then the pointer goes back to "the mess" and I have to reset it manually. Not a major problem, just an annoyance. Obviously I have nothing better to do than to be annoyed. Anyhow ... has anyone else encountered this problem? For that matter is there available anywhere a list of known 3.1 upgrade problems? Thanks in advance for any information.

The fix is a simple one. Go into your
SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys directory and
delete the pointer.prefs file. Now go to your pointer editor
and resave the settings. All should be well after the next
reboot.

Delete the settings in the Envarc:Sys/ drawer. The prefs editors in 3.1
will load older config files, but they can't be edited properly.
The only settings that you should have to delete are:
Envarc:Sys/palette.prefs
Envarc:Sys/pointer.prefs
Don't confuse these settings with any "custom" settings that might be
saved in your Envarc: directory.
If these files are missing when you invoke the 3.1 palette and pointer
editors, you won't have any more trouble.

I did the same thing you did for a while, brought up the pointer prefs from user-startup. The problem disappeared when I installed Magic Workbench, I have no idea why or how. But my pointer is normal now.

OS 3.x preference files are incompatible with early pref files. I'm surprised the Installer didn't take care of this. Try: Rename SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive_OLD Or, delete SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/pointer.prefs Reboot IF> Thanks in advance for any information. You aren't running any non-Com commodities or hacks, are you? NickPrefs is a no-can-do with 3.x. There is a new PointerX to make the busy clock and an updated ARQ that work with 3.x. Hope this helps. If so this could be it - I'd hate to lose it though (or is there a version that works with 3.x on aminet?). Sigh ... anyway this gives me something else to try. Thank you and everyone else who replied to my question.

In fact, while you're at it, delete all the old OS prefs files. They're not compatible with 3.1. You'll have to write down the settings first, and reset them manually with the 3.1 prefs programs. You are quite correct, sir. :-)

Deleting all old stored preferences solved the problem. (Good thing there weren't very many.) Thanks to everyone who helped.
