I had the same problem with a few programs when I got my 28.8 modem. I found
out the problem was that my conputer (a 4000/40) couldn't handle the
information fast enough if it ran at 28.8kb constantly. Most programs worked
in short bursts and everything was fine. I first noticed it in FTP. After the
initial 20 second flood of info, the modem would sit around a while doing
nothing and then disconnect.

I learned, from this newsgroup, that the internal speed capability can be
increased by reducing screen colors. Instead of trying that, I dropped the
speed to 19.2kb even though it is a 28.8kb modem and I haven't had any
problems.
