A good compromise for me was to set my HD's partition to 1024 byte blocks. This
is only about 10% slower than 2048 or 4096 (I didn't see more than a 2%
difference in speed between them) but is at least twice as fast for file
transfers. The directory operations are slightly slower (about 5%, I think).
For general use, this works pretty good for me on this 1 gig Seagate.
Going to 1024 byte sectors on the Zip ups it's rate to 1.1 megs/sec for reads.
That's almost full speed on it (I get 1.2-1.3 megs/sec raw read speed)! With
512 byte sectors, it runs about 500-700 K/sec. Only problem is AmiBack still
thinks it has 512 byte sectors, so I can only get 50 MB on a 100 MB disk. I
ended up putting it back to 512 byte sectors so the backups work correctly. I
think it's time I get a different backup program.
