Rick - From the RAINBOW echo conference:

In a message of <Dec 08 08:07>, GEORGE THEALL (1:273/203) writes:
GT>Does this mean, Frank, that articles from USENET newsgroups can be
GT>*automatically* forwarded to an Echo? And vice versa? As you know, I've
GT>been doing this manually. I don't think I've missed any messages so far,
GT>but an automatic system would be much better.

George,

Contact Rick Ellis of 1:102/161 for info on how to do this; he recently
sent me some instructions with my USENET address convention. I'm sure
he is porting messages to and from USENET automatically. Tell him I sent
you.

Part of the problem with cellular modem connection is that most telephone
modems aren't particularly noise resistant. The modems ($$$$$$$) made for
cellular incluse their own error correction, but most are proprietary.
There is a company in Skokie, IL called "Tellular" which makes a
standard RJ-11 interface for cellular phones. Basicly it plugs in in place
of the handset and gives you a standard modular jack. Plug a phone in there
and pick it up... you hear dial tone. Dial, and it decodes the touch tones
and makes them into what the cellular unit wants to see. Instant fake "real"
phone. Great for stuff like portable pay phones, etc. (No, I don't work
for them.) As to the portable
(hand held) with an "RJ" its proably a ways off. Most cellular portables

are already "ten lbs. of s*** it a 5 lb. bag" as it is.

Sure, I know what FTP is; we have TCP/IP running on our VAX and I have a
copy of the MIL-STD on FTP sitting on my desk at the moment. I know I can't
use FTP from Fidonet, but I was wondering if any of the regular Fido mechanisms
would work. My uucp gateway sysop answered the question by saying that only
messages can be transmitted, not files.

GT> of the message. If you ask for a specific binary file, you will
GT> receive multiple messages which are pieces of the file uuencoded. To
GT> work with these files that you receive, you will need the following
GT> tools:
GT> 1) An editor to remove the mail's headers and footers.
GT> 2) A file transfer package to get the file(s) to your PC.
GT> 3) UUDECODE to change the files back into an archive.
GT> 4) PKZIP v0.92 to extract the files from the archives.

I think I have all the above; I got a uuencode/decode program today that
seems to work fine on the Rainbow. Do you have uudecode, George? If so,
I'll zip up a couple text files, uuencode the ZIP, import it into a message,
and send it off to you. You can try the same thing from your end. BTW, my
gateway says the messages should be limited to 10KB; not a real lot, but evident
you can break up the uuencoded files pretty easy and transmit the pieces as
separate files.

GT> My info comes from John Quartermain's _The Matrix_ (an excellent source
GT> of info about networking, IMHO). IFNA apparently has registered the
GT> domain name "fidonet.org" with the folks in charge of Internet; this
GT> probably works off of MX records. It means those of us with smart mailers

GT> (1:125/406) and castle.fidonet.org (1:152/201). The former appears to
GT> handle the UUCP stuff while the latter deals with mail to/from the
GT> Internet.

It appears that a uucp infrastructure is being set up within Fidonet to try
to accomplish least-cost routing for private messages; the users themselves
won't bear any of the cost. It may take a while for this to become a universal
feature within Fidonet.

GT> following the keyword "ARPA:". Frank, would you mind sending me a
GT> message using this method? I'll let people here know whether it was
GT> successful.

I'll give it a try sometime over the weekend. Received you latest netmail
msg today, and I owe you a reply anyway.

GT> Isn't networking fun?

Yep; and cheap so far, too! (Zero cost, in fact).

Hi, George. My gateway (Joe Keenan) gave me directions on how to do it,
also. Problem is, it requires a sysop to set it up, and George Theall doesn't
yet have his own board.

Kurt Reisler has compiled a list of all the (numerous) Usenet newsgroups,
and I hope to get a copy of it soon. Assuming I can maintain my link to my
gateway, I plan to make at least the DEC-oriented newsgroups available on
this BBS.

But that's not the same as integrating the conferences; that's another issue.

Down here, we don't have any RBboards or User group.

Thanks for the info, Ron. I'll see if I can get in touch with Tellular and
get on their mailing list for new product announcements.

Frank, someone has already answered you, I think George did. But
it seems to me that you should be able to mail files, just like
you mail messages. You would then need to cut of the headers,
and trailors if there are any, leaving the file intact. I would
guess that the file would have to be in an encoded form if it
is a binary file. I would also guess that only people with
private fidonet addresses could receive those files. For example,
I do not think that I could receive a file on fidonet. Messages
to people like me are public and I do not know how do anything
with it but read and reply (perhaps I am more ignorant about this
than I should be).
