I have some DEC Scholar DF224 Modems which DEC has donated to a local school. Some of them work normally... they auto-dial with the control sequence ^A^BT<phone-number>^M as expected. Others return 'Ready' upon ^A^B and do not go off-hook, but can still be used if I manually dial with a desk-telephone. I have no documentation on these modems. Can someone tell me if the non-dialing modems are in some kind of 'maintenance mode' or other state, and how to return them to normal operation? Or are they just malfunctioning? The modems which return 'Ready' display stored phone numbers if I type ^A^B<any-letter-from-A-to-O>. Many thanks. Barry Kort

Yah, they are all DF 224-AA. Moreover, the ones that don't dial have phone numbers stored on registers A through O. If I send ^A^B and then any letter from A to O, I get a readout of the stored numbers there. When I manually dial to connect them, some of them report 'Attached' and 'Disconnected' while others report only 'A' or 'D', so there must obviously be some command mode for changing such configuration parameters as Terse/Verbose and the stored numbers. I suspect the ones that aren't dialing are in the command mode instead of the normal operating mode.

You might also check to see if the DF224 is in the AT (hayes compatible) mode. I seem to remember that you can change it back and forth, but there is a procedure to follow to accomplish it. Megan

Another correspondent also mentioned the Hayes Mode vs. the DF03 Mode. These modems are evidently in DF03 mode, because they say 'Ready' and not 'OK'. My other correspondent thought 'ENA AT' was the command to put them in Hayes Mode, but that can't be right, because 'ENA' just gives the Phone Numbers stored in Registers 'E', 'N', and 'A'. I found that ^G causes them to go Off Hook and report 'Attached', but they are just pulling dial tome and are not actually dialing or connecting to anything. So I'm still baffled and waiting for further advice and suggestions. Barry Kort
