I don't know alot about this technology, but...
Digital has a device and driver to read/write gapless on 
BI based VAXes running VMS.  The controller is the TM32, the driver
is PLDRIVER.  

On the workstation side, you might contact the following outfit,
who I understand makes a QBUS gapless interfaces.  I don't know if they
supply a UNIX driver, nor do I have their elephone number:
