Thank you very much, Mr. Tatarsky. The "unsupported X11" load module was the culprit in this case. I have received several queries by E-mail to share the solution, so this is obviously a problem that is wide-spread. You have saved me many days of frustrating searches and tests and I am very grateful. This is why I love having Usenet as a resource. I could have relegated my problem to the DEC tech-service phone tree, but within hours I have a working solution that has me up and running -- without the pain and suffering. Now if only the DEC team that created the OSF/Motif 1.1.3 release had tried installing the system as presented, using the most obvious "all of the above" selection presented by 'setld' (which I and most of the systems administration public has chosen), and THEN TRIED TO COMPILE ANY MOTIF CLIENTS, this whole problem might have been avoided. Personally, I have always tried to load and run major applications on a "clean" system, devoid of the usual development tricks of the trade. I haven't mentioned that I had to load the Ultrix operating system *three times* because I was using all the CD-ROMs shipped in a single package for version 4.3 plus OSF/Motif, then I loaded the security patches on the CD-ROMS in a separate package to bring me up to version 4.3c. This was a mistake since the security patches blew out Motif. I had to load DEC windows -- then the patches -- and only then the Motif package. Of course the proper sequence was never mentioned in the installation and release notes. DEC could probably save technical support costs by hiring systems persons that are not Ultrix-aware (like me), and handing them the installation media and seeing what troubles they get into *BEFORE THEY RELEASE THE PRODUCTS*. Better yet, they could test these things in-house and make sure there isn't a problem. I have been administering Silicon Graphics machines for several years, and never had any problems with OS installation/upgrades, so at least someone out there is doing it right. Sorry if this message has developed into a sermon. I would like to thank you again, Mr. Tatarsky, for enforcing my belief in Usenet as the greatest pulic source of information I know. -- -- Lee E.
