I forgot to mention that DEC's description of the DS700-8 says it is
for full modem control, and the DS700-16 is limited modem control.

The -8 is ONLY for GESTAPO grade foreign PTTs that DEMAND that you cater to
their obsolete whims. For the rest of the world, the functionality in the
-16 model is more than adequate for use even with out of band flow control
with any modern modem.

An internal DEC memo and the .PS of a DEC manual that should be but isn't
shipped with DS700s and that isn't even for sale from DEC is in the [.ds700]
directory if you FTP to cca.camb.com . Once you have read all that, DS700s
make LOTS of sense.

I assume your MVII has an ethernet card. The DS700 software IS on the
latest ConDist CDROM set on cdrom 2 of 7 in [DS7010...] so you no
longer have the $ pain of a binary kit on tape.

If you want a cheap but very good modem try the ZyXEL 1496E version.
See comp.dcom.modems - there are folks there selling it for maybe $350
or less. It does NOT go to 115.2, only 57.6, but does fax, caller id,
various security games, answers to selective ring patterns, and does
voice in and out.
