SCSI for DEC 5400??

We want to add a SCSI adapter to our DEC 5400.
fyi... 5400 is a MIPS RISC processor in a Q-bus
          configuration running Ultrix.

The local office claims that the 5400 does not support SCSI and
that we'd need to upgrade to the model 5500 (board and memory swap) in
order to achieve SCSI compatibility.

Is this marketing hype or is there some technical problem that
prevents the use on SCSI on this system? If it's possible, who do you
recommend for third-party sources for the SCSI adapter since DEC is
not interterested/able to sell us one.
