How do you reach DEC employees via email?

I have some friends that work at DEC who have given me email addresses
("person@machine.enet.dec.com"), but my school machine always responds
with "host not known" when I try and email or finger them.

Is there some special way to get through to "enet"?
Is there a special address format I'm not using?
(Don't flame, I'm still learning this stuff).
