HP disks on DecStation

Hi,

I have an HP 1350SE hard drive in an expansion box that I would like
to use with my DECstation 5000. I have talked with other people on the
net that who have done this sucessfully so I know it is possible.
However I am having problems. When I put the disk in the SCSI chain
the DS cannot find it at the console prompt using cnfg and it will not
boot if the disk is turned on. I have eliminated all the simple
problems (cables, dip-switch settings) and the disk works fine on a HP
(Apollo 433) machine. At this point I can only think of two possible
reasons for this.

First, the disk needs to be formatted for a DecStation. If that is the
case how do I format the disk if I can't get it attached to a device.
The second possibility is that the controller on my disk is different
than the ones on the disks that people had told me about earlier. If
so, does anyone know any good places to buy a new PROM to pop into the
disk controller?

thanks in advance for any help,
