Dave,

I don't know of any specific HP problems (they generally make pretty good
stuff) with SCSI disks. Although, I'm not familiar with the HP model number
you've mentioned.

The only time I've seen something like this was with a Hitachi disk that
had what I would consider a firmware problem. IMHO. Basically, the ANSI SCSI-2
spec recommends a response time to a SCSI bus reset of 250ms. The ANSI SCSI-1
spec hadn't addressed that at all and when Hitachi migrated their drive over
to the new standard they didn't check the firmware out (it was responding at
somewhere around 670ms).

The original firmware for the DS5000/200 would wait 240ms and then reset the
timer to wait another 240ms after a SCSI bus reset before it would assume that
a device was MIA (Missing In Action). You might want to check and see if this
is what's supported in the HP firmware (you could call their tech support folks
about it).

If you're feeling adventerous, there is a file I had put up on gatekeeper to
address this. You can find it in:

gatekeeper:	16.1.0.2	gatekeeper:pub/DEC/TriAdd/README_scsi.hex
							  scsi.hex

Some folks have made their own SCSI PROMs for the DS5000/200 from here without
problems (I can't claim that this is a supported practice, it just happens to
be the revision of code in the new PROM for the PMAZ-AB SCSI Host Adapter).

Of course, if that doesn't happen to be the problem and the HP folks are not
sure what's wrong, you can always have the folks at HP give us a call here at
TRI/ADD. We'd be happy to help.

I hope that helps.

				Thanx,
				  AJ
