Info Wanted: News Setup...

Hi there,

We're going to migrate our news system to new platforms. Would like to
seek your advise on the news system setup plus performance, and share
your experience in this issue. You advise is vital to us since we can't
get testing machines from vendors to perform tests on each model. :_(

Our current setup is:

Using HP 9000/845S (HP-UX 8.00) as the primary news server of .hk
domain, which accepts news feed from feeders from Wisconsin(US) and
Munnari (Aus), and feeds news to local academic institutions (total
number of 4 secondary news servers at present, and is growing rapidly).
The disk space requirement is approximately 64MB per day (batch file in
in.coming, out.going, plus news articles in news spool). This news
server is also used for news client access of the whole campus as most
of the staff and student here don't have a slave news server at their
departments :-(. We're using Cnews, nntp 1.5.11, rn, nn, and xrn.

We're now considering to add news server to bear most of the loading of
existing news server. Our major concerns are be:

1. compatibilty of existing news server and software with the new news
   system, say new versions of Cnews and nntp, or INN, etc.
2. performance of the news services of different nature - large volume
   news batch feeding vs. small volume news client access which requires
   fast response
3. portability of the news related software on the new platforms. We'll
   consider AIX, Solaris, HP-UX 9.0x, and OSF/1 (Alpha).

I would like to seek your advice on :
- if you're using news on either one of these platforms;
- which model of machines you're using;
- performance of your news system;
- any bottleneck and problem encountered on your news system;
- the versions and news-related software you're using.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Sorry for asking such "localized" (to our setup) questions... :-|

Thanks in advance !!

Regards,

--
