#Hi there,
#
#We're going to migrate our news system to new platforms. Would like to
#seek your advise on the news system setup plus performance, and share
#your experience in this issue. You advise is vital to us since we can't
#get testing machines from vendors to perform tests on each model. :_(
#I would like to seek your advice on :
#- if you're using news on either one of these platforms;
#- which model of machines you're using;
#- performance of your news system;
#- any bottleneck and problem encountered on your news system;
#- the versions and news-related software you're using.
#
#Any help will be much appreciated.
#
#Sorry for asking such "localized" (to our setup) questions... :-|
#
#Thanks in advance !!
#
#Regards,
#
#--

I use VNEWS and Multinet News. I did use BULLETIN for INFO-VAX and
the (was it) INFO-SPACE newsfeeds.
We have a VAX cluster running VMS 5.5-2HW.
Problems with VNEWS: you can't search the TEXT for a word like
you can with BULLETIN and VMS Mail,
you can't scroll backwards through the text
that you are reading,
you can't forward (the "S") command an article
to a typed-in list of users . This forces me
to go to a file and VMS Mail the file to the list.
Advantages of VNEWS: it's the fastest newsreader I've seen,
it has lots of useful features,
it's free (I think) .
Problems with Multinet News:
it reads in ALL the messages in a group before
you can read the first one. THIS IS REALLY SLOW
(to put it politely!) and really irritating,
its commands are non-intuitive to me (hey, I got
into VNEWS right away, but the News commands don't
seem to do what I think they should do),
you have to pay for it (I think).
Advantages of Multinet News:
it allows better searching (I think),
it allows you to scroll backwards (real nice).
Just my $.02 worth. I prefer VNEWS because of the speed and ease
of use. I don't know who wrote it. THe split between VNEWS and NEWS
here is about 50-50, but I would rate my opinion higher because I use
the USENET newsgroups more than anyone else here (I would bet).
