We have a serious problem and would appreciate any help anybody can offer. I will post a summary if and when I get enough replies. SITUATION: We are in a university environment with several separate schools, each with their own subnet. There is, however, campus-wide Appletalk, which means that someone on an Mac in the engineering school can access Appletalk services all the way over in the business school for example. PROBLEM: We have several printers that we would like to RESTRICT access to. (We only want people in our Appletalk zone to see and have access to these printers). The problem is that if we turn on these printers, everyone across campus can theoretically print out hundreds of pages to these printers. PROBLEM #2: Netware 3.11 has a printer "hiding" utility. It takes the Appletalk printer off the network and assigns it a NW_ queue which handles all printing. This is fine and dandy, but it appears that printing PostScript Level 2 through this configuration is unreliable. Apparently, there are a few incompatibilities involved in this setup, so it's unacceptable for our operations unfortunately. QUESTION: Is there some sort of utility that can "hide" our printers and other Appletalk resources from other Macintosh users across campus (that have access through campus-wide Appletalk?) We need a solution that is specific to our zone. (I have heard of Laserwriter Lockout, but that wouldn't work in our situation.) Please help if you can! Thanks in advance for any replies, and I will post a summary when I get enough information. Michael L. Sung msung@eniac.seas.upenn.edu
