Canopus Pure3D Vs. Diamond Monster 3D II...?

Hi,

I would like to know if Canopus's Pure3D II is better than Diamond's Monster
II 12mb card. From the reviews, Canopus's card is slightly faster than
Diamond's. Can anyone tell me who owns this card if they are happy with it?
Any pluses or minuses to consider?

Thanks,
Terry

I would answer your question if you hadn't cross-posted it to half of Usenet.
Please read the FAQ and come back.

I have the Pure 3D II and am happy with it. I only hooked up the TV out
once, so I guess it was not worth the extra money for me. At the time the
difference was 30$ and I liked the smaller design and the ease of
overclocking that came with the Pure 3D II. Only you can decide if it is
worth the extra money. I can assure you that the card is a top notch
performer and has been very reliable.

Well, I was talking to this guy, in a deathmatch one night, and he said he
had just gotten rid of his Monster card (not sure if he had the voodoo2
version though). He said he didn't like it, it only gave him something like
60fps, while most of us toil away at below 30! Anyway, he traded it in and
bought the Pure 3d and was pushing anywhere from 75-100fps. Mind you, this
is only what I heard from him and have no proof and don't know what his
config was. I only have a PowerVR M3d (heavy sigh). From what I've read
though, the voodoo2's are all comparable in performance, so much so, that
you probably wouldn't know the difference unless you ran 3d winbench or some
kind of benchmark test.

The Pure3D II is a much nicer board all around IMO.
I'm running a Pure3D II with a Pure3D II LX in SLI mode. This
allows gamers to purchase the $320 Pure3D II with
the excellent TV-out and non-reference design optimized
for speed, while allowing them to save a few bucks by
picking up the Pure3D II LX for $279 (without the TV-out
and cooling fan the Pure3D II features) to add for SLI
mode gaming. See other manufacturers make you purchase
another identical board and another bundle, which you are paying
for.

The LX performs the same as the Pure3D II and it's
cheaper, it just don't come with the extras. Both are 12MB
boards and they're an inch shorter in overall length. This
allows it to fit in to smaller, more crowded PC cases.

I'm not at all saying the Diamond Monster 3D II is
a bad board. I run two 8MB versions in another
machine. It's just true that the Pure3D II is a few
fps faster than ANY of the reference design boards (Diamond,
Orchid, Creative Labs and Wicked 3D). The Canopus
stuff is also engineered by them, they didn't clone the
reference design like the other companies have. Overall
the Pure3D II is a rock solid performer.

I imagine performance wise they aren't that far off. I replaced my Monster
1 with a Pure 3D II (not the LX) and it does very well. I got the model
with the cooling fan.

Yeah, basically I've heard that the Pure3d II is a slightly faster card than the
monster 2 (something like 5% faster). However in my personal experience, I've had
a monster 2 8 meg card, and I now have SLI Pure3d II. I got 71 fps timedemo's on
demo1 in q2 at 800x600 rez with the monster, and I get 60-65 now with the
Pure3d's. However at about the same time I changed cards I also installed a
monster sound card, and threw on a gravis gamepad. So those might be slowing down
the equation some. Windows may be scanning the game port to see what it's doing,
and that could be slowing it down. Or the monster sound could be slowing down the
game some (this is one of the original monster sounds, not the new MX-200 or
whatever).

However I haven't tried switching peripherals around and benchmarking.. At the
moment 5 fps is not a big enough deal for me to rip my computer apart.

I can't comment on the Canopus card but I have a Diamond Monster 3D II and
think its great. It installed without problem and has run first time with all
my software. Frame rates have gone through the roof! Again I can't comment on
Canopus, but Diamond have a nice web site for drivers etc.

I have just upgraded from a PowerVR M3D to a Monster 3D II and it is REALLY
worth it, frame rates have soared!! Go and buy one as soon as you can!

Is there a reason you are s\choosing between these two? If you have access
to a Fry's Electronics, they were selling the Orchid 12 Meg for $199. last
time I checked. I have a couple and so far no problems. Nothing I've read
indicates a noticeable difference in performance between the various brands.
The Canopus card has the fan and tv out, but for the price difference you
could buy another brand and add a fan, with a nice chunk of change left over
(unless you really want the tv out).

Sad to say that they apparently do not maintain a web site. They are
involved in a legal dispute over the "Fry's: domain. Actually, in every
respect save pricing they suck. I was able to locate a partial list of
their locations:

 www.8x8.com/docs/contact/Fryslisting.html

This does not include the Fry's in Garland (I think), Texas, and probably
others.

i just read an article online about 3d cards at the following:

http://www.gamecenter.com/Hardware/Roundup/Voodoo2/?st.gc.fd.m.ha

they talk about the voodoo2 cards out there, the one they recommend is the
canopus pure, although the monster 3d II came in a close second.

I have a Pure3D II and think you will find that it has many more features
in terms of software capabilities and much better tech support than
Diamond. Canopus is also the king of drivers. I have seen the same games
with clearer sharper graphics on the Pure3D II than on the Diamond VII.
If you want the best buy Canopus.

The reviews i have seen say that the Diamond is faster. But either way
the speed difference is so minute its not worth worrying about.
Buy the card that has the best price or software package etc.

I have run with both the 8mb and 12mb versions of the M3DII, and it's fairly
much like every other V2 card out there. Suppose depends on if you like
Diamond's support or not.

Personally I have found Canopus cards to be better refined, but more
expensive. Also, are you looking at the top model with fan and TV output or
the one without?

Well, let's put it this way -

I have 2 M3D IIs in SLI and in UNREAL running at 1024 x 768, we're
looking at 40 fps...

Sure the Canopus PURE 3D IIs may give me a faster frame rate but
I know I paid much LESS for the two of mine...;-) Besides, when I had
the PURE 3Ds, some games had problems with Canopus drivers - and
yes, their legendary tech support came out with patches... but personally,
I prefer not to deal with the issues of d/l patches and etc etc IMHO.

Besides, anything outside 32 FPS is negligible right?

I hear that the Diamond is faster in 24mb SLI mode, but not 12mb. It's
kinda wierd actually. But from the what i've heard the Canopus Pure3d
Voodoo2 offers additional software things, and some other featured
programs.

The Diamond has the best saftware package, Imcoming(full), Monster Truck
Maddness 2(full), and Battle Zone(full, with enhancements). Price wise,
well I find that most cards about the same, but check out your local
stores.
