Ok, after much reading, I decided to "upgrade" my well working Monster 3D card with 1.08 Diamond Drivers with Directx 3.0 to the 3dfx 2.43 drivers and directx 5.0. After MUCH reading on how to do this I removed my M3D card from Device manager, removed the inf file from windows/inf/other, installed Dx5 (completely), reinstalled M3D 1.08 drivers, then installed, the 3dfx Direct Draw libs, THEN installed the 3dfx 2.43 libraries... Didnt work. What I now have is a machine that shows a 3dfx voodoo under the multimedia section of device manager, AND loads the Monster 3D control panel. What I show installed looks like this: (from the Monster control panel) glide.dll version 2.1.1 glide2x.dll version 2.43 glide2x.ovl version 2.43 sst1init.dll Initcode $Revision: 5$ dd3dfx.drv version 4.10.01.0013 dd3dfx16.dll version 4.10.01.0013 dd3dfx32.dll version 4.10.01.0013 fxmemmap.vxd version 4.10.01.0013 (From the Directx Control panel.) Direct3D Version 4.05.00.0155 DirectDraw Version 4.05.00.0155 DirectInput Version 4.05.00.0155 DirectPlay Version 4.05.01.1583 DirectSound Version 4.05.00.155 The hell of it is, this "Looks" right as far as I can tell. However, when I load Mechwarrior 2, the joystick control is non existent, and when I load some other 3dfx games, now the trees and stuff look like triangles or squares with 3d textures glued on. Not sure if this is as a result of the newer drivers not compatible with other games, or some funny interaction between the libs I have loaded. The Joystick I recalibrated under the directx 5.0 joystick control panel. It still wants to pull to the left in Mechwarrior and doesnt react to the throttle at all. I reckon thats some directx 5.0 shit. However can somebody tell me if the configuration I have above is correct? Somehow I dont think Im supposed to have glide.dll still, but I do. Also am not sure Im supposed to still have the Monster panel. Everything works, but Im not sure it works like its supposed to. Email response please! Eric Joiner

Eric why reinstall the old monster files over DirectX 5.0? Do a complete cleanup removing everything to do with the monster, check your regestry to. Then re-install DirectX 5.0, once this is done then install the 3Dfx drivers for DirectX 5.0. I followed the instructions given by 3Dfx but my computer told me that the location didn't have any information about the drivers. What I did to get around this was to find the ini file for the 3Dfx D3D 5 driver and installed it with a right click. Then I went back into Device Manager to where the info on the 3Dfx Voodoo was kept (Multimedia devices) and pulled up the change driver/ show compatable drivers dialogue. There it showed the new 3Dfx driver and after selecting it I just had to direct the path to where the new files that accompanied this driver. Hope this is some help to you. As for the glide games, well they should not be affected by the installation of DirectX. I am using the current 3Dfx glide drivers and things run fine on my system. Piers B.

I know, because I went through the same headaches you did. One looks like mon something I believe. I have removed my Monster and replaced it with a Stingray, so this is from memory. Another way to track it down is do a find of all your *.inf files then sort by date. Hey...I just remembered...You'll find the other one under, where else?, inf/other! Braun

What I did was:
1) Install the Monster3D drivers from the Diamond CD.
2) Install DirectX5.0 (Which comes with StarFleet Academy) and make
sure to overwrite your display drivers.
3) Install the latest 3DFX drivers from www.3dfx.com by finding
the Monster3D card and replacing the old driver with the new
3DFX one as per the instructions.
4) Install the latest glide stuff.
And that was it. I certainly did not hunt down all the Diamond 3DFX
stuff and delete it. In fact I have done this procedure a couple of times
and never had a problem.
Also, I have always found my Monster 3D card in the
"Sound, video and game controllers"
Part of the device manager. After I installed the latest 3DFX & glide drivers
the Monster3D control panel (in display properties) was replaced with the
3DFX one.
