Should I be able to BOOT from my SCSI CD Burner? My BIOS includes the following option in the Boot Sequence CDROM,C,A - is this limited to IDE CD-ROMs? SCSI,C,A - is this limited to SCSI Hard drives? Do I need to set a particular device number? Can you boot at all from a SCSI hard drive? I am about to put in a real SCSI card and a second CD-R (reader). Will I have any hope with the second Reader? Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-586TX3 BIOS: Award. Version I'd need to reboot... CD-R: Matsushita CD-R CW-7502 SCSI card: Adaptec (single device card packaged with CD-R) Thanks Scott chico_bento@hotmail.com Could you CC and email to my for replies posted to the group? Thanks

Thanks First and foremost, make sure your SCSI card allows you to boot using any bootable SCSI device. You have to be more specific or visit Adaptec's webpage to check if your SCSI adapter allows this feature. Once you've determined that the card does indeed allow booting, you must set your motherboard's bios to boot SCSI first. Then you go the SCSI card's BIOS and set up which device should be set to boot from. This is usually done by specifying the SCSI ID# of the device that you are interested to boot from.

I boot from SCSI CD's or CDR's or CDRW's but this is done by setting the BIOS on the SCSI card to boot the device. The SCSI setting on the motherboard only allows a SCSI card with a bootable BIOS to boot first rather than the onboard IDE controller. Some motherboards allow there version of a SCSI card to be added. Unless you have a suitable card with a boot BIOS eg Adaptec 2940 (AU,UW,W2W), motherboard manufacturers SCSI card, etc then forget it. If you card is a AHA1505/1515, etc they DON'T boot - as they don't have a bootable BIOS. If you have a Adaptec 2940(as above) you can boot Windows 98/NT4/2000 and install it from the CDROM - no floppy required. Even motherboards that supposedly support booting from an IDE/ATAPI Cdrom do not boot Windows 98/NT4/2000 because they don't support Microsofts EL- Torito protocol. It can all be confusing at times but remember this - The wonderful thing about standards - is that there are so many of them.
