CDROM and souncard crisis

I am trying to connect a Panasonic CR583 CDROM and Yamaha 16 bit soundcard to my win 3.1 computer system. The soundcard has an IDE interface. The CDROM is connected to it but will not respond when the computer is booted. There is power to the CDROM as it lights up and the tray operates ok. I have loaded the CD drivers and get a "no controller detected" message on startup. I have not loaded the souncard drivers as they are on a CD. Catch 22 situation I think. Do I need to load souncard drivers for the IDE interface to work or is this another problem? Many thanks for your attention. -- Mick

I remember Mozart (OAK?) sound card, which MUST be initialized with command line, that consist IDE port settings. (BTW, what port/IRQ you use for CD-ROM ? What OS you use ?) It also depends on driver. I have SBIDE.SYS which require to set port/IRQ. But also I have Acer(?) CD driver that scans IDE lines for ATAPI compliant device like CD-ROM and set port automatically. -- Ian ********************************* Telrad Communications Co. Have you checked whether or not the CD-ROM is set up as a slave-drive or
not? I vaguely recall that mine was configured as a slave, so it could
be just plugged in with the hard drive as master. I think this might
explain why you don't detect a controller.
I'm not familiar with the soundcard, but many need a driver to be run in
config.sys to make the settings, rather than using physical jumpers on
the card.

Does'nt that model require a Panasonic interface, and not an IDE.

Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, if you
do it today and like it, you can do it again tomorrow.

Have you tried connecting the CDROM directly to your IDE
connections on the motherboard. Maybe even to the same cable
for your hard drive. And configure the CDROM as said above.
The CDROM driver (in config.sys) should then find the CDROM.
And, of course, don't forget MSCDEX in autoexec.bat.
You can now access the CDROM to get your sound card drivers.
Copy them to your hard disk. Also, does the sound card offer
configuration options for the onboard IDE. You may need to
set these. Now reconnect the CDROM to the sound card IDE, etc.
BTW what is the CR-583? I have CR-584-B CDROM's. And an old
Panasonic driver that works with them.
