I have found that the Cardinal modems I have worked with (the 14.4K versions)
to be basically unreliable related to the quality of connetions. This is
based on supporting the ramp up of 12,000 users onto a online realty
multilisting service. Who knows, the maker of Cardinal may have changed this
in thier 28.8K modem. Still, it was a better modem than the Zoom modem.

Stay away from Boca. You either get a good, reliable modem, or you get
garbage (unreliable connects). Over the three years of working with this
modem (with the 1,000 dial-in users using this modem), and the excuses Boca
had for thier quality control problems, I would stay away from this modem.

Stay away from Zoom modems. This has been the most unreliable modem I have
ever worked with in my 12 year career involved with supporting dial-in users
on minicomputers. I am sure there are exceptions, but my experience has shown
they are garbage.

I have had good results from Practical Peripherals and U.S. Robotics Courier.
The Sportster modem should be a workable modem too. The redesign of the
Sportster had significant problems (I think the "forgetful" engineer forgot to
test the modem before releasing it into production). All of this version had
to be recalled back to the factory. Since then, I have not heard of any
serious complaints about this modem.

Also, you may consider the Telebit Worlblazer modems. The Multitech line of
modems are OK.
