I'm not sure if smoking has something related to my PC's troubles, that's why 
I'm asking.

In general, nicotine can harm the hard disk and the hardware devices so that 
smoking environment would have damaged the hardware of PCs as well as 
CD-ROM or the 3.5 inches diskettes of OS/2. 

On the other hand, I had no trouble with Microsoft Windows 3.1, MS-OFFICE,
and other Microsoft products and Compaq PCs.
