I've recently acquired a second-user DEC DSP3107L 1GB SCSI disk.
I think these were OEM'd for Digital by Quantum. It is jumpered
to spin-up on power and usually it does. Some variable time after
powerup there is a click sounding like head retraction and the
drive spins down. If powered up again immediately it refuses to
spin up.
This behaviour upsets the host - it's clearly a fault rather than
some sort of power saving mode. No problems with cabling,
termination or PSU and all other SCSI devices in the chain are fine.
Is this a known mode of failure? Is there anything useful I can do
short of throwing the drive away? All help, advice and comment
gratefully received.
Many Thanks,
Neville Wilford
