Plato Motherboard and Large Disk

A week or so ago I posted a message recounting how I was getting write
errors on a WDAC31600 disk drive when it was placed as sole disk or as
master or as slave to a Quantum Fireball TM 3200 on the primary IDE
channel of a Gateway P5-90 with a Plato motherboard.

I have just tracked this down to an incompatibility between this drive
and the BIOS 0.04.13.AX1T. It is not clear whether this is a fault in
the disk or in the BIOS - the Quantum disk works correctly as master
or slave with this BIOS. Reverting to BIOS 1.00.12.AX1T cures the
problem of the write errors.

However, this leaves me with another problem. Contrary to advice from
Gateway, 1.00.12.AX1T fails to correctly support the large Quantum
disk - FDISK reports it as only having 504MB whereas 0.04.13.AX1T maps
the full space. Gateway advised that the mapping would work when the
CMOS settings configure the drive with explicit CHS settings (rather
than autoconfigured) and for Extended CHS access.

Has anyone been able to use a disk larger than 2 Mb with 12.AX1T
without deploying the Ontrack driver?

Mike
