I've got two different textbooks, one from Addison-Wesley, that say otherwise. SCSI-3 is a tentative designation applied to a number of experimental techniques, such as the fiber channel that you've mentioned, plus high-speed serial over copper conductors. The following is quoted from 'The SCSI Bus and IDE Interface,' by Friedhelm Schmidt, put out by Addison-Wesley, Page 84, section 9.3... "...The ANSI SCSI committee has already been working for quite some time on SCSI-3. In the tradition of the previous specifications, SCSI-3 will be compatible with SCSI-2. Among the more tangible improvements, the documentation for SCSI-3 is better organized and more modular..." "...In the physical and protocol area, SCSI-3 defines new interface formats, such as fiber optics. The idea of communicating with SCSI devices across a regular serial interface is also very attractive. An additional bus phase will be added to the parallel interface SCSI that has been discussed so far. Support for multiple hosts will be improved and 16-bit Wide SCSI over a single cable has been included and already adopted by the industry..." There's more, but the point is clear. SCSI-3 is, technically, already with us in the form of Wide SCSI on a single cable (68 conductor). I might add that I don't find mention of the term 'SCSI-4' in either book. Watch out, IDE/EIDE. ;-) ==Bruce
