JVC CDROM writer (and alternative) opinions

I am seeking views on alternatives to tape based backup, using a CDROM
writer. I am biased against tapes as they tend to be affected by
temperature and humidity, rendering backup useless.

Any views on whether this is a reliable unit, whether prices for these
are expected to drop quickly, and whether other brands (or
alternatives for backup) offer better value.

Thanks for information and please forward a copy of response to my
email account, as I do not frequent access to the newsgroup .
