Did you know that the bigger drive mean the more space wasted. And they are less efficient at handling small files. Take a look at this.. Drive partition size : Cluster size 16MB to 128MB 2K 128MB to 256MB 4K 256MB to 512MB 8K 512MB to 1GB 16K 1GB to 2GB 32K Dos FAT support up to 2GB only. This mean that a file of 2 bytes (yes two bytes) occupies 2K on a 100MB HD, and the same file occupies 32K on a 1.2GB. Wow what a waste. Imagine if you have 1,000 file with less than 15K, this will take twice the space needed on your HD. Because a cluster can only be occupied by one file at the time. So if you have a 67K file size, it will take 96K of real space on a 32K cluster size HD of 1.2GB. If you want to know how many space wasted you've got on your drive.. try the following: at the native dos prompt type: chkdsk (to see how many file you've got on your HD and what's the size of your cluster) Let say half of the file on your HD use half of the last cluster they are using. ex.: I have 6,000 files: 6,000 / 2 = 3,000 X 32K = 96,000 WOWWWW 93MB lost in my HD for the fun of it.. Keep those partition drive to less than 512MB (8K cluster), unless you use HPFS or NTFS. Or if you have only COUPLE BIG FILE on that drive and NEED THE SPACE FOR IT. -- Martin Pineault /* Keep looking for it, soon you will find it. */ OSG Inc. /* Those who search, will live till the end. */ osg@qbc.clic.net /* Have we ever met, be gentle and polite. */
