A better analogy is similar to doing a PKZIP to the files before they are stored. Just like in PKZIP, certain files compress better than others. >no.name@spammers.go.away (Patrick Dunford) wrote: >>On 6 Nov 1997 12:20:18 GMT, snakeman@turtle.edeneast.com (RHS Linux >>User) wrote: >>>Be very careful in an attempt to purchase a SEAGATE 3200 3.2 Gig capacity >>>tape drive. Your motherboard must be able to support at least a 1 mb/sec rate. Many name brand true pentium boards support this. Some inexpensive true pentium boards do not. (I have one with a Cyrix 6x86-P166 in it. However, I paid only $250 for both six months ago. Cost of frugalty.) Instead, they have a chipset support a 500kb/sec rate (like mine). If it doesn't, you need the controller card. My Dell Pentium 5166 at work does fine with the Seagate 3.2gb backup unit on the floppy controller. The same is true for all tape drives over 1gb on the floppy controller, they all require the faster transfer rate. >>This is true of all capacities of backup drives but often in practice >>you can get even more compression than 2x. With a fast enough processor, it speeds the throughput to the tape also.
