Hi all,

Can anybody tell me a good IDE CD-ROM 24x or faster that does fast DAE, ie
higher than 6x, and also allows click and distortion free on the fly
burning?
Don't suggest Panasonic, because I have already had a 586 and a 588 model
and they don't impress me because they can't read AudioCDs normally (stalls
the whole system, mouse won't even move) when I try to play them normally.
Can't fast forward either.

Thanks, please email your replies.

Then you have problems with your system dude {not the drives}if
thats happening when you use the Panasonic CR586 and CR588. I have ran
both of these {I own the CR586} AND HAVE HAD FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE and
definitely no stalls. Please tell me,after reading all the praise
about these two drives you didnt really think these drives had the
problem you described. Do the math !

I see you have the AOpen on the subject.
I tested both a AOpen 36x IDE and a Pioneer 32x SCSI. Forget the
Pioneers, terrible DAE.
The AOpen can do 100% DAE (always the correct CRC, matching my
ULtraPlex) at constant 8x to the HD, but fails synch sometimes when
doing on-the-fly.
Lucky you, I wanted one of your Panas and couldnt' find them around
here. :)

I can confirm this answer for 100%. I have a CR587 myself. I do have the same
freezing' problems when using Windows95 CD-player, but not when I use the
audioplayer of Cooledit or Audiograbber. For dae Panasonic is perfect.

Please give more details on the "terrible" DAE from the Pioneer.
Like what's terrible about it and how can you test DAE quality
other than with an ear?

There's nothing wrong with my system it's that the fussy 32x Panasonics
won't read burnt audio CDs that I did in my Panasonic 7502-B. Plus when a
disc is crappy (some CDRs) it spins up and spisn down and throws up a big
shit, when they all read perfectly in the 6x.

Hmmm....

I am only just getting into this meself - a question that I would ask is how
fast is your system? If your system performance is too slow, you will get beer
coasters, specially if you try to run other jobs at the same time, specially
audio.

Cheers

John

All of the Panasonics (586 & 588, and have seen many in use) I have used
have been find for normal CD-Rom use. In fact they are better than most and
are truly MultiRead devices. I suspect a system problem if they make it lock
up, and not the fault of the Panasonic drives.

Boz.

Ba-ha-ha. The Panasonics are dodgy for reading DA off burnt discs. Try
ripping some songs off a burnt CD, the ripper will stall at 99.3% and then
continue to 99.7%, stall again and then finish. Playing audio from burnt
discs is also a joke. It freezes, loses settings and then refreshes.
Which also reminds me. When the drive can't read a disc, it cracks the shits
and spins up and down, rendering the system unusable while it decides it can
actually read the disc if it tries harder.
Never any problems with the 6x or the 2x Panasonic, except they can't rip.

Try the 32X or 36X models from Philips. The Toshiba is also great,
except for the speed, but I HAVEN'T personally seen the 32X model yet.

	Good luck,
