Would appreciate feedback on Boston-area computer stores that assemble
Pentium systems, particularly ALFA, HI-Q, and Main Board. Mail to me as
well as a post here would be helpful.

Thanks, Edwin Meyer

I've done business with Hi-Q in the past and I've been reasonably happy. I
found out about them from their ads in the BCS Magazine.

Like most small shops, their support technicians are overworked. I must
confess, I have trouble understanding them sometimes, too (language/accent
barriers). I had some hardware difficulty with the accessories I purchased
from them (my monitor flaked out). My sales rep, Brendan, handled the
situation efficiently and quickly, swapping the defective component out
with another model right away.

Brendan and the technicians I spoke to were also very helpful in getting
questions answered.

I can recommend NPC Computer Corp. (617-965-8325) 1320 Centre Street
in Newton. I bought a 386 computer there 4 years ago. In that time I
had just 2 problems. The disk developed some bad sectors after about
14 months. They reformatted it for me, and I have had not any
problems with it afterwards. The battery for the clock died 4 months
ago, and I purchased a new one from them. All in all they build
reliable hardware. A friend of mine at work bought a 486 from them a

I bought a 486DX2-66 from them a couple of weeks ago. The I/O controller
board died about a day later, leaving the system unable to boot. I had
to leave a message for tech. support (it _was_ Friday afternoon), but they
called me back within a couple of hours, walked me through a couple of
quick things to check, then asked me to bring the system unit in.

I brought the box in late Monday morning, and they'd fixed it by Tuesday
noon.

I haven't had any more problems. I'd recommend NPC.
