Hello, There are so many words over the web about Athlon & GeForce... I wonder if, with the last driver, a GeForce is still slower on an Athlon, compared to a P3. Or is everything ok now ? More, I suppose that the GeForce don't use the 3dNow! stuff, nor the equivalent-stuff on a P3 (I've forgotten the name). You guess it : I'd like to know if I should buy a new P3 or a new Athlon to boost my GeForce DDR. Have fun. PS : If you answer in this newsgroup, please email me too, at : dlonving@hotmail.com

I had the Geforce DDR in a P3 500 and I have the same card now in my Athlon 650 and it definitely runs faster on the Athlon. Now, maybe that 150mhz difference in processor speed has something to do with it, I don't know. But it does run better, for me at least, with the Athlon. KNI / 3D Now! support aside, the Athlon has a much faster FPU unit, and as such is a much faster CPU, period. However, with the advances in KNI / 3D Now!, and without such support on the GeForce256+Athlon, you do experience a performance hit. Therefore, in my opinion, you'll probably get *almost* the same speed in GeForce256 applications on the Athlon as you will on the PIII. However, you will lose performance on the PIII outside of GeForce256 applications. Jon. My Athlon 500 outperformed a P3 600 (doubt it was a coppermine) in Quake3, I think the benchmarks were at sharkyextreme. My system and the P3 were similarly configured(both using 128 emgs ram, GeForce DDR, same Q3 settings, etc...).

Hi! I have a system with a AMD K7 500 and a Creative GeForce Pro DDRAM. Prior to this system I had a P3 500 with the same card. The ATHLON system is faster than the P3. The only problem is the drivers to the card. They suck! (when you play games) 2D performance++++. 3D still a long way to go. I use the latest drivers from Nvidia 368. Anyways, I feel that the ATHLON is the best buy inspite of the driver problems...:-) K7 RULES! Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Generally when I found that the Geforce T&L is being used, the results are the same whether you are using an Athlon, Coppermine, older P3, or even an overclocked Celeron. If and when you see an advantage, it tends to be some few insignificant number of frames which can be attributed to some driver optimization on a respective chipset. The Geforce is an equalizer when T&L is used, but hardware T&L does not scale. Right now, Geforce can enjoy AGP2X on BX, AGP4X on VIA 133A and 820 chipsets, but only AGP1X on the Athlon Irongate chipset. However, the Irongate chipset can enable AGP sidebanding which all the other chipsets cannot (AGP sidebanding lets you transfer data from memory to video card at true AGP rates, instead of PCIx2 rates.) Thus this makes AGP2X and AGP4X on the other chipsets rather moot and useless unless they're rendering on main memory using AGP. AGP sidebanding is found with Detonator 3.69 and with some registry tweaks (check http://www.3dnow.net or amdzone.com). Also, Detonator 3.69 seems to have better 3DNow streaming support than 3.68, and polygon stripping and setup seems faster on these drivers. Rgds, Chris (And the NUMBER ONE top oxy-MORON 1.
