My Impressions - V3-2000 Overclocked

Picked up the 2000 AGP out of curiosity (I love overclocking) and
decided to clock it up to 3000 speed (166mhz). Installed it, driver
install went okay, no problem.

Before that though - Took a Pentium-sized fan (actually a ball-bearing
fan off a Celeron heatsink) and secured it to the V3-2000 heatsink
using a small rubber band thru the heatsink screw holes and the 2
opposing holes near the V3 chip. Moved the PCI card in slot 1 down so
there was room next to the V3-2000 for both the fan as well as added
airflow.

Then I downloaded the V3 Overclocker 1.3 from voodooextreme.com, put
the speed at 166mhz, enabled the higher quality video for glide and
D3D ("22bit"), and disabled VSync.

So far, so good. Games are running fine at the higher clock speed, I
replaced a V2 SLI and an ATI Rage 128 combo... I can indeed see a bit
better quality in some games, actually the map board in the first
minute of half life (after the intro) when you walk into Black Mesa,
the map behind the security guard that says "Black Mesa Research
Facility", that had a distinct new contrast/saturation to it. And
elsewhere. Expendable looks near indistinguishable from when I played
on the ATI.

The only place I could see remnants of 16-bit dithering was in smoke
effects.... play NFS3 in the rain, look at your opponents water
spray/trails behind them - ugly dithering! But that's an extreme
example.

2D quality is as good at my Rage 128 card, if not better. Definite
improvement over the TNT I tried at 1024 on my monitor.

Overall a good finished product, easy install. Performance compared to
my SLI rig is fine (doesn't blow it away or anything). Not a bad deal
getting 3000 performance for the 2000 price. Note by the time you buy
a fan/heatsink whatever to use on the 2000, you might as well have
bought a 3000 for the 20 buck difference .... so if you want a value
thru overclocking I suggest you do it with the 2000 only if you have
some heatsinks lying around that you can use the fans off of.

At least it'll last me until the end of the year when everyone's
nex-gen part comes out.

Side note NOT ALL BANSHEE FIXES work for the V3... EA games are the
worst example of this.. if you have NFS3 retail (not V3-3000 pack-in)
you need to get the registry file from Triple Play 2000 to get NFS3 to
recognize your V3 in 3dsetup. Basically for any game that had
problems recognizing the Banshee (esp. from EA) you will have similar
problems. Most everything else is problem free but EA needs to get
off their butts and make up a 3Dsetup program that can deal with newer
cards... it's limited to whatever cards they put in the 3ddata file
when the game comes out.

Hey, what about this registry file from Tripple Play 2000. I have NBA Live
99 but it will only reconized the Voodoo setup, nothing else.

That's apparently a Glide issue - play it in Direct3D and the dithering goes
away. Did you make sure to engage the high-quality filtering for Glide/GL apps
with the seperate utility?

Try my NFS3 Fix post over on the 3dfx.products.voodoo2 group or
3dfx.games group... the reg. file is contained within.

The new filter seems to help a lot in Glide with the tire smoke type
effects...also, although I haven't checked it out to see, mipmap dithering
seems to help. I really don't know whether it's the mipmap dithering by
itself or the new filter by itself or both--but the tire-smoke effects seem
to have the old ugly dithering eliminated by 95% or so.

Yup. I'll try it in D3D though.

Well I turned mipmap on, check NFS3's opponent water trails in the
rain like I said... helps a little but this is a definite 16-bit
dithering effect/moire. But fortunately it's the worst example...
haven't seen anything except improvements in all other games.

Oh and as a followup, running my 2000 (w/fan) at 175mhz, played
Requiem for 3 hrs., no lockup.

Slap that fan on your 2000 folks... and download Voodoo3 OC.... no
need to buy a 3000.... Although it is only $20 more at Best Buy (149)
so get the 3000 if you don't already have a fan off a heatsink to use.
