Hi. I am interested in getting a PCI Pentium motherboard and was hoping to get SCSI support built in, instead of EIDE. If anyone has some details on motherboards with onboard SCSI could they please post a reply with some information? Apparently there are some around with the Adaptec 7870 chipset which is the onboard version of the Adaptec 2940W adapter? Thanks, Craig Brookes - cbrookes@omen.com.au

Hi, I got and get excellent PCI/SCSI from a 60Mhz Intel from EPS Technologies, I think you chose the right path to go...SCSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Intel's Pentium + SCSI = excellent performance. Make sure you get a scsi compliant motherboard. I'm buying a Plextor 6x CD-ROM to add to my ADAPTEC 2940 SCSI2 Configuration (remember....7 peripherals on adaptec 2940 scsi2) +++++ 2 SCSI Lightning Quantum (Texas Instruments!!!!) 540 MB hard drives = = = = = happiness. Please buy SCSI instead of EIDE!!!! Jrdube - aol.com screen name John R. Dube'

I've been using an older ASUS motherboard that came with the
first PCI chipset and a 486/DX2-66 . It has an NCR 53C810
SCSI chip on the motherboard and came with driver software, etc.
May I suggest checking ASUS to see if some of their line of
Pentium boards has a SCSI interface on the mb - it seems likely.
The board has been entirely reliable. Using the NCR software
that came with the board, additional drives (including a CD-ROM)
have been just a few minutes to install and have worked without
difficulty. I have been trying to get it to work with a Pentium
Overdrive processor and may or may not succeed.
The ASUS WWW server in Taipai is at http://192.72.126.1/ and
must have an mb product/feature list. It does have BIOS software
updates, utilities, and the like to download.
A big win for SCSI is detached mode - that is, the SCSI Bus is
multiplexed, though each drive is single threaded. This keeps the
bus loaded and is of advantage if your software can use it.

Dube' I have both, SCSI Wide and EIDE I do alot of Video capturing and need the best performance I can get on a Pentium. I can tell you one thing from experience, the IDE will give you better performance for your system files. The new FAST ATA-2 IDE hard drives in Mode 4 can out perform some SCSI hard drives. I have several SCSI hard drives taken from my Amigas when I upgraded them to larger drives. Quantum ELS 85, Quantum 105, Maxtor 213 and Maveric 540. I also have a Fireball 1 gig and Micropolis 4221WAV Wide. My Samsung 1.2 gig (fast ATA-2) will perform better than the 85,105, and 213 meg drives. (by a long shot!) The Maveric 540 and Fireball are comparible in program execution but not for system files. The Micropolis 4221WAV is much faster than the IDE but at a price of over $800. The best thing is to have your system files on a good EIDE and program files on a fast SCSI with PCI controller.

The Fireball SCSI has a braindead SCSI interface which couldn't keep up with the drive and the Maveric is old, too (and slow). >The Micropolis 4221WAV is much faster than the IDE but at a price of >over $800. You could simply buy SCSI drives which are as fast as or faster than any IDE drive. The difference in price is not the big issue anymore. A really fast drive _isn't_ cheap - if it's SCSI or IDE. Quantum Atlas II and\or the Grand Prix II - I'm not sure if there's any difference beyond the interface. IBM Ultrastar (XP?). The Seagate Barracuda's have had some firmware problems in the past, and I'm not sure if they're over their teething problems yet. Patrick Hall phall@umr.edu

But watch out! There are two almost identical named models out. One is slower and cheaper, but even dealers fail to sort that out. The WD AC21000 & WD AC31600 are a bit slower. Performance: Drive Read min/aver/max Write min/aver/max Overall WD AC21000 3.09/4.74/6.04 2.87/4.50/5.99 3.15 WD AC31600 3.10/4.76/6.02 2.84/4.58/5.99 3.18 Fireball 1080A 2.99/4.98/6.09 2.99/4.98/6.08 3.35 >=>You could simply buy SCSI drives which are as fast as or faster than any >=>IDE drive. The difference in price is not the big issue anymore. >=>A really fast drive _isn't_ cheap - if it's SCSI or IDE. Avoid the Quantum 1G SCSI version. It's SCSI interface is braindead and could not keep up with the drive (no, I couldn't state that often enough ;-). Else, look for RPMs. If it's 7200 look closer. If it's 5400 look at the price, else look away (for a fast drive). Fast SCSI drives are (no particular order only as examples): Drive Read min/aver/max Write min/aver/max Overall Fujitsu M2934SA (4 GB) 1.68/6.85/7.28 3.65/6.52/7.29 3.65 IBM DORS-32160 (2 GB) 3.63/4.70/5.47 3.63/4.70/5.47 3.05 Measuring was on an Asus Pentium board with PB-cache, EIDE on board, SCSI with NCR8251S under D*S. All shamelessly stolen from various c't mags. They used their own benchmark program H2bench, all values are in MB/s. Overall is an weighted average value, reading 60%, writing 40%. Uli -- Dipl. Inf.
