Help - bad power supply?!

The other day the power cut off in my home for about a second and then
came back on. The pc was on, but I have a surge protector installed,
and the "ready" light was still lighted on it afterwards. A few days
later the cpu fan started vibrating annoyingly, and the CD ROM doesn't
read some disks (makes a low grinding noise). It reads other disks
just like before w/ no problem. Today, the boot drive, which is new,
failed to come up to speed a few times after spinning down during
power save mode. It would try to spin up and then spin back down
sometimes. Which of these problems are related?! I'm planning on
replacing the CPU fan, but I'm wondering if I need a new power supply?

Thanks very much,

Joel McClure

Hi Joel,

We have had a hard disk that stopped running from time to time,
and we could hear it start spinning again after a few seconds.
This happened in a very irregular and unpredictable manner, which
I heard later is usually the sign of a power supply failure.

Before changing the power supply we tried it with another HD,
checked the power saving options in SETUP (all turned off),
changed the mother board and the HD controller. None of these
helped, but fortunately it cost us nothing as the PC was still
under guarantee.

So if your problems arise in an unpredictable manner, there's
a good chance that you have a power supply problem (loose contact,
overheating?)

Good luck
