Hello. I recently had problems with internal my PC clock. It works correctly when my computer is turned on, but if I turn off, then clock stops (not 100%, but a 50% aproximate). I have a 486DX4; but my clock begun to failed when I installed a second internal modem on my computer. I have all the slots occuped. When I installed the second internal modem, my Joystick begun to work bad. I can do nothing with my Joystick. Later, I remove the second modem and my Joystick had worked fine. But, I don't know what happens with my PC clock. Please help me. Bye and thanks.

This is not an IP Support problem. Please do not use the
demon.ip.support.pc newsgroup for such questions.
The clock problem could be a failing motherboard battery. On the sort
of motherboard you have this is likely to be a replaceable cell, of the
same general sort as used to power ome calculators, personal organisers,
etc. Look on the motherboard for a flat metal disc in a holder, about
2cm in diameter.
And make sure you have noted down on paper all your CMOS settings -- a
failing battery will affect the clock first, and then lose all that data
as it gets worse.
Because of the hassle a battery failure can cause, I have posted and e-
mailed this message.

Check interrupts. Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD) helps. Check: Mouse on COM1,Modem on COM2. Where is your Joystick?? Probably also on COM1. First Modem was probably on COM2 or COM4. When second Modem installed it ate up COM1, probably trying to use COM3. (rem:COM1&COM3 share interrupt, as does COM2 and COM4). Where is the clock? Q: have you checked the battery? Does it die after long periods of computer disuse? Battery may not be holding charge. Frequent use? Battery may hold charge with frequent use. Good luck.

FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT on my system, maybe this will help others. I have 3 parallel devices on my system (Pentium 166 Clone motherboard with award bios.) HP Laserjet 5L, QuickCam, and a parallel Zip Drive. The Quickcam and HP Laserjet will not work on the same parallel port, this is a known problem. I purchased a second parallel port card set up as LPT2 and hooked them up that way. Worked fine. When i got the Zip drive, I ended up purchasing a parallel port switch. The quickcam and printer are never used at the same time, so I hooked it up as follows. LPT1---->Parallel Port A/B Switch--->HP Laser on A, Quickcam on B LPT2---->Zip Drive When the Parallel Port A/B switch is in the "A" position, the hardware clock freezes. When it is in the "B" position, all is well. Problem solved! Cause? Cheap A/B switch? Probably......Not sure... Hope this helps those few folks I've seen with the same problem! Steve
