I'm posting this for a friend who's having some problems with his hard drive.
You can reply to me, or send directly to him at n1175343@fit.qut.edu.au

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been having some major problems with my new hard drive.

My system consists of : A 286 16Mhz (Harris CPU) 1 MEG RAM
			A 16-bit Super I/O card
The hard drive : WDC 2340 caviar
			Sound Galaxy 16 soundcard.

Now basically I have found that the drive performs normally with the
soundcard removed. I have devised a few simple tests, such as
installing various software, uncompressing large archives, and deltreeing
large directories.

With the soundcard removed these operations execute normally. With the
soundcard installed they execute normally at first, then very slowly,
such that the computer seems to be waiting for something, and then it
continues on again. Eventually, if not from the begining, DOs reports
error accessing drive c: (retry). It just does nothing, makes no sound,
the computer just waits and waits till it can't wait no more.

I have tried different Irq's and DMA channels for the sound card,
currently Its on IRQ 7, and DMA 1. ON these settings the Drive stuffs up
in all the ways listed above but didn't die in accessing it. It still
had long periods of silence, but it eventuelly finished what it was doing.

All these operations normally happen really quickly and systematically,
but these waits are like 20 or 30 secs of nothing.

I thought that the I/O card jumpers might need to be changed to allow for
a high speed drive but I don't have the details for the jumper settings.

I also thought maybe the 286 can't handle the speed of the hard drive, it
is very fast, 10 to 11 msec seek, 0 sec track to track, and 1.5 meg/sec
transfer. But the computer can handle it on it's own but I don't
understand how the sound card is effecting it.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone that can help with this
delema, as I would like to keep the hard drive and the sound card. There
must be a reason for this.

Please email me at n1175343@fit.qut.edu.au

Cheers ALL!!! Mark Symonds.
