In article <1993Dec13.004421.12436@trl.oz.au>, mathers@sibelius.trl.OZ.AU (Steven Mathers) says: > >OK, this is definately a stupid question, so pardon my ignorance... > >Can I write a 32 bit program for DOS? Is the 386 hobbled to run in some >kind of 8086 emulation mode when runnning a DOS application? > >Is there a FAQ that covers this sort of thing? > Thanks. > The quick answer to your question is yes. The best thing for you to do is to get the GCC compiler for dos (DJGPP). I believe the 'home' for this is at omnigate.clarkson.edu (/pub/msdos/djgpp). However, this requires that the code only be run in dos mode (does not seem to work in a dos window under windows for me), but this is not a big deal for what I need the 32 bit compiler for. DJGPP comes with its own memory extender to allow access to the 32bit memory of the chip (which I believe just by-passes dos more than anything else). If you want a 32 bit compiler for windows, supposedly the new 4.0 Borland compiler will work, but as my copy is on order and has not arrived yet, I cannot tell you if it works or not. --markk
