] From: imbri_m@aesc.cs.odu.edu (Mark Imbriaco) ] Why wouldn't you consider a modem without v.42bis? I have a GVC v.42 wit ] the port locked at 19.2k and I ran it side by side with a v.42bis modem ] noticing little or no difference. MNP functions almost as well, and if y ] are doing file xfers you would want it turned off for better performance ] anyway.. right? ... correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't v.42 error correction, while v.42bis is compression? if ur running solely .zipped files, then the bis isn't gonna help much, but if u read messages, or do a lot of text based transfers, the bis will help quite a bit (pumping 14.4k up to like 38k and 19.2 up to 54k i *think*) as to turning off the MNP, it depends on what protocol ur using. if u use ZModem, then u'll get better performance w/ the MNP off, since zmodem already has a lot of error correction overhead. if ur using ymodem, then leaving it on will increase performance, since ymodem doesn't have the overhead... at least that's what i've picked up from listening to people talk about the hispeed modems. i'm still trudging at 2400 (anyone want to sell a 14.4 or 16.8 for 150 bux?) l8r- James ketrenoj@ucs.orst.edu
