Parallel To SCSI Interface For PC

Does anyone out here in netland know of a device that would let me connect
my laptop (with no expansion slots, but with a parallel port) to the SCSI
chain on my '486 so that I can treat the 120mb drive on the laptop as a
disk drive on the '486?

What I want to accomplish is being able to backup the laptop drive to the
tape system on my '486. It would also be useful for installing software
from the CD ROM drive on the '486 onto the laptop.

Any information would be appreciated.

Well I don't have the info off the top of my head, but there are adaptors
for laptops that give you a SCSI port via your parallel port (like the ones
that give you an ethernet port). Would be a LOT slower than norm, but it
would do the job. If I come across a specific one I'll pass the info along.

Don't know if this will work, but you might contact the folks at
Trantor. They have a parallel-to-SCSI adaptor that works quite well.

This will give the laptop access to the scsi bus; it will
be able to see the devices in the 486 machine. The 486 system
will not see the disk in the laptop. The laptop should be able
to write the tape drive except for one problem.

Most scsi controllers have their scsi address set to 7. Since
all scsi addresses must be unique there will be a conflict with
the scsi address of the 486 machine. If you can solve this
problem it should work.

As was remarked, and as is consistent with the SECOND stated purpose
above, this would probably let the laptop access the tape drive on the
SCSI chain, although you probably need to turn the 486 off or the
SCSI-Ids would conflict.

The FIRST stated purpose above, to allow the 486 to access the
laptop's drive directly, probably CANNOT be achieved this way,
however, oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos/lan/unet11.zip is a program which uses
a parallel port connection to permit one PC access to the drives and
printers on the other PC, and should permit the laptop (configured as
the Workstation) to access the drives on the 486 (configured as the
Server).
