Upgrading a 55SX

I purchased an IBM 55SX two years ago. It is a good machine, but now I am
looking towards experimenting with different OS such as 386BSD. I am now
trying to make a decision on wether to keep my machine and upgrade or get
rid of it and start from scratch. I have two specific questions that I
would appreciate any info or advice on.

1) Is it possible to upgrade an IBM ps2 55SX from a 386SX to a full 32 bit
386 or even a 486? I have seen an advertisement for Aox MicroMASTER upgrades
and I am interested in hearing any comments, prices or other possibilities
for upgrading.

2) Is there a version of UNIX like OS for MCA architecture? The less cost
the better. I have heard about an OS made for MCA machines by a company
in Texas named UHC.

Thank you for any information.

Well as I have found out, IBM dealers seem next to useless on telling you
about this type of upgrade. But I have found that Microchannel lets the
new processor card totally userp the control of the rest of the machine.
So the processing will be done at whatever the processor of the card is
capable of (even higher that 32 bit). But to take advantage of the speed
of the card (ie MegaHertz) most of your memory must be on the same card as
the chip. But most upgrades will tell you this, and you will want to buy
more memory anyway.

Since the bus is only 32-bit, performance on a 486 will not be
reduces, but 586 preformance would rely on you not wanting fast video.
But I don't think you would care that much. For all intents and purposes,
your upgrade would be as good or better than buying a new machine (better
because the Micromaster's design is damb good).

But the price changes weekly, but was under $1000 when I last
checked, but ask them for imformation (and some other companies in the back
of PC-World). I think you may be impressed.

Unfortuantly IBM changed the way the Hard disks work on the PS/2, nothing
which drives them directly works.
(also no-one appears able to supply details of how the HD controllor
works, dispite asking several times on this newsgroup)

Linux 0.97 (available from banjo.concert.net) works fine apart from the
afformention HD problem.
