Does anyone have usage knowledge of set_elt()?

I am trying to work with a replacement for the asy driver and it is
panicing ("no as allocated") on the first access to low memory.

The only extern function that I am able to find in the asy that looks
like a candidate is set_elt(), but I am quite open to suggestion.
