Count me in among those dissatisfied with MacInTax last year. Before then, I was a very satisfied user for at least five years. Not only was ChipSoft's 1991 version of MacInTax bug-ridden, but ChipSoft was not interested in even hearing about errors. As a specific example, the 1991 version of MacInTax does not correctly handle nondeductible contributions to IRAs (such as might be made by people who are covered by pension plans.) It treats the nondeductible contribution as a premature distribution from the IRA and makes entries on various lines of Form 1040 corresponding to its idea of the penalties and taxes due. (Yes, the entries can be over-ridden and 0s entered there, but I am sure that some people assembling their tax returns in a hurry must have overlooked this item.) I called ChipSoft about this, and after having to listen to music on hold for over 30 minutes, I was told that (a) there was no error in the program logic, and (b) even if the program was making an error, it was the customer's problem, and they had no intention of fixing the error or warning registered customers. In any case, the accuracy of the entries on the tax return was the customer's responsibility. In short, I was told to bug off. I decided that I had better check every entry on my tax return by hand. I did not find any other errors, but there may well have been errors in the many forms and schedules that I was not using. Some of the negative comments made by other readers of this newsgroup about the 1991 version of MacInTax lead me to suppose that there must have been other bugs and errors as well. I am in full agreement with the many complaints about the 1991 version of MacInTax, about how a good product was ruined by ChpiSoft, and about ChipSoft's poor technical support. I do not intend to use MacInTax this year because I do not trust the program anymore.
