The problem is solved. I don't know what caused it to happen; apparently
it had to do something with file sharing (all the Macs are networked
via thinnet).

When we rebooted the machines this morning, Excel would start fine. Makes
me wonder why it did not work yesterday, but at least our secretary can
continue working now ... :-)
