The easiest way is to install the Equation Editor.  From your document,
select the INSERT menu, and then go down to OBJECT.  You'll get another
menu, and select FORMULA from here.  Then the Formula Editor will run. 
Type in the variable (call it x) that you want "barred" and then there's
one of the pop-ups that shows shaded boxes.  Select this one, and then
select the shaded box with the bar on top of it -- it'll "bar" the previous
character.  Good luck!
