I'd suggest you dump GopherApp and switch to TurboGopher 1.0.3 instead. 
They're both free and available for downloading by anonymous ftp from the
usual gopher sites. I found TurboGopher is much faster for everything on
my own Mac IIci, so I suspect you'll find the same. Give it a try!

(Yes--it does everything GopherApp does and more. You'll like it.)
