Visually Impaired vs a GUI Interface

Yes, there is a product called the Voice Navigator that can be used for
this purpose. Additionally, Apple is working on voice independent speech
recognition.

Since the mac has build in sound processing chips and a consistent
interface with almost all programs (i.e. File ... Save, File...Quit,
Edit...Copy) it seems to be the ideal system for the visually impaired.
The only problem I see is dragging files around in the finder, but surely
something is being done there.

A friend of mine here at UT is working on software for the Mac that reads
text intelligently. That is the software knows when St. should be street
and when it should be saint by the context in which it is used. I saw a
demonstration and frankly, I was amazed. His philosophy is to work with
standard, off the shelf equipment so he got a Mac. That way, a visually
impaired person could sit down at any Mac and go to work.
