Problem with 16" images

I recently downloaded some 832x648 color graphic screens from apple.com.
Only
when I open them in Teachtext do I get to see them in full 24-bit color.
Here's
a question (possibly relateing to the problem: one of those 24-bit images
takes
up only 95k of disk space, while another Pict (converted from a Gif) of
the same
size, but only 8-bit, takes up nearly 900k of space. While the large PICT
functions normally as a startup screen, the one from apple.com displays a
9"
picture of b&w garbage centered on the screen. I have tried to convert
the
image to a larger PICT, but have failed. One conversion program could
not even
display the image, even though it has the smae type and creator as the
functional
startup screen. My question is: what the hell is going on?!?! ---> Why
won't
they work as a startup screen? Why are they so small compared to other
PICTs?
Programs used: GifConverter, Giffer, TeachText, Image, PixelPaint,
Imagery &
Imagic. I don't have access to Photoshop. All I want to do is use the
24bit
color 832x648 images from apple.com as startupscreens. Can anyone help
me????
Please email me ANY help you have... Thanks :)
