hi,

we just got 4d and im very new to databases and their theory so i have
a few basic questions.

firstly, i want to create a menu item in my database to add new items.
what is the best way to implement scripts or procedures so that the id
number to the item i add doesnt get added if that id number already
exists.

also, when i call this procedure (by selecting a menu command) the
input layout that i want is not the one i get. why is that?

	DEFAULT FILE([annual dq file])
	OUTPUT LAYOUT("Output")
	INPUT LAYOUT("ModInput")
	SEARCH
	If (ok=1)
		DISPLAY SELECTION(*)
	End if

when i use this, the search works fine and the output is displayed in
"Output", which is a table structured layout, and when i click on one
of the records in the table (layout) i am brought to an input screen
that is not "ModInput". to add more confusion to my mind, it works
when i am doing this in the User mode but not in the Runtime mode.

any suggestions?

jay

thanx
