Helix let me down, other options?

I have been using Double Helix for 3 years now. One of the main reasons for
choosing it was the ability to run a client and the server on the same machine
(no dedicated server for the network). Well, Helix Express (new owners-new
name) decided to eliminate that capability... without mentioning the fact in
their upgrade offer. So, after generating a university purchase order,
receiving the upgrade, and spending the better part of a day updating the
existing database, trying to figure out why the client on the same machine as
the server wouldn't function, calling their tech support, I find out the next
day from a sympathetic tech guy... I can no longer get there from here!

Kim at Helix Express, on the receiving end of my indignation and upon hearing
that I might have to look into other brands, promised "you can try them, but
you'll come back because all the others are a bitch to program."

Well, I realize we can continue as before without the upgrade, but I am,
nevertheless, looking. Ours is a small database and network. We do not want the
expense of a dedicated server. Are there any other relational databases that
work without a dedicated server machine?

Thanks in advance.
