UXBRIDGE, MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND, 1994 MAR 10 (NB) -- A new study
just out claims to demonstrate that Apple Mac users are more
productive than those who use PCs running Windows.
According to the study, which was completed by Arthur D. Little,
the management consultancy firm, the Mac is "fundamentally a
more productive platform than comparable Windows computers
for the broad range of computing tasks tested." Mac users, the
report notes, completed the suite of tasks in 44 percent less
time, and were almost 50 percent more likely to complete the
tasks correctly.
The study covered a group of more than 100 business computer users
and measured their productivity across 24 different computing tasks,
including editing documents, managing files, and printing.
The users' performance was evaluated in two areas -- time taken to
complete a task, and success or failure in completing the task
correctly. In many cases, Newsbytes notes, the differences were
dramatic. Compared to their Windows counterparts, Mac users
needed 68 percent less time to manage files, 33 percent less time
to edit a document, and 57 percent less time to print a document
to different printers.
Overall, Mac users completed 85 percent of their tasks correctly,
while Windows users completed theirs only 58 percent correctly.
"Business have spent millions of dollars over the past decade
installing PCs, with very little proof of their increasing
productivity," explained Dr David Nagel, vice president and
general manager of Apple's Applesoft division.
"Finally, this study gives them that proof. Macintosh won because
the hardware and software are designed together to increase
productivity. That unified architecture quite simply makes
businesses more productive and helps their employees complete
tasks quicker and more effectively." he said. "This is much more
than a question of 'ease of use' and graphical user interfaces --
the comparison is 'ease of doing.' And tasks are done more cost-
effectively and accurate on a Mac."
