I have a small problem with Reflex Plus. I am trying to convert a Database to text format so I can upload it to UNIX. Seems simple, doesn't it? Anyway, It will not allow the DB to text conversion for some reason. Here is everything I did- loaded Database selected file|new selected table report and gave the report a name picked the corresponding Database from the Hard Drive hit "include all" button to select all fields hit "include all" button to select all fiels for record selection selected "export data" clicked on text format now-- here's the problem. There should be a list of all of the fields on the left list, but it is completely empty. Why isn't reflex listing all of the fields from the database? BTW, I'm new with this database stuff, so If it's simple, go easy on me. Joe Geniec jgeniec@cis.ohio-state.edu

The only thing you can export is a fairly simple set of collected fields (the exact terminology escapes me at the moment - it's been a few months since I last used Reflex). I have always loved Reflex (in a love/hate sort of way), but it was easily the most difficult DBMS for me to learn. The only way I found to export data to a file was to format it in a text string using special characters to indicate tabs and the like, then use SuperGlue to capture the printout. This is not an easy thing to learn to do. Reflex is diffcult to learn and is NOT supported by Borland. I would suggest that you consider using another DBMS to perform your task. I find Omnis to be the best database system I've ever used, but it is pretty expensive. Michael Ward mward@netcom.com

In Chapter 11 (Importing & Exporting Data) Open the DB. Select "OPEN UTILITY WINDOW" fron the Overview menu Make sure there is no qualification in the top right box (starts blank anyway) Choose Export Qualified Records from the Misc Menu Click Text File button Include all fields Name the file Poof - tab separated fields in a text file 8) --- Chris 'Face' Janton Home (602) 881-6634 Internet: face@arizona.edu

I do it all the time. What you have to do (and this is not obvious) is to *select the repeating collection* that you want to export from. The whole report is not exported, just the contents of one repeating collection. Yes, this is a pain, (in the) but you can live with it. This is in the manual, pp339 to 341, esp 341. It is also true that you can export from the utility window, btw; I wanted to tell you that you missed only one tiny, but crucial action from the report export task. Cheers.
